Our First Special Educational Needs Family Workshop

At Birkbees Limited Group, inclusivity is at the heart of everything we do. That’s why we were thrilled to host our very first Special Educational Needs (SEN) family workshop over the February half-term at Nursery Rhymes. It was an incredible session designed to ignite the senses and create memorable experiences for all who attended.

Our sensory-themed workshop was a delightful journey, offering children a chance to engage with various activities that stimulated their senses. From music to aromatic playdough infused with herbs, every detail was thoughtfully prepared to encourage exploration and joy.

Our dedicated SENDCOs across the Birkbees group worked tirelessly to set up an array of engaging activities that sparked awe and wonder. The children immersed themselves in water play, experimented with trajectory schemas, and enjoyed time in our specially designed sensory room, where the focus was all about colour.

The highlight of the session was a heart-warming group time where children gathered to sing along with finger puppets. Without a doubt, “Twinkle Twinkle Little Star” was the undisputed favourite, filling the room with smiles and laughter.

Following the activities, families were invited to share a cosy afternoon tea. Parents and children enjoyed a delicious spread of cheese and tuna sandwiches, homemade cheese scones, fresh fruit, blueberry cake, and much more. It was a lovely opportunity for families to connect and relax together.

As a parting gift, each family received a special wellbeing bag—thoughtfully packed with little treats for both children and parents to take home, extending the warmth and care beyond the session.

Parent Feedback

We were overwhelmed by the positive feedback from parents who attended the session. Here are just a few of their lovely comments:

  • “Yes, very helpful—lots of information.”
  • “It’s very good.”
  • “It was more than expected; it was fantastic to see staff from other nurseries and have a chat.”
  • “Got the support and advice I needed.”

Hearing such wonderful feedback reaffirms our commitment to creating inclusive and supportive experiences for all families.

We are already looking forward to our next adventure! Our upcoming workshop will be an outdoor experience inspired by the beloved story We’re Going on a Bear Hunt. Get ready to step into nature, embrace the adventure, and—most importantly—have fun! We can’t wait to see you there!
