Sikh Temple Visit
November 2018

On Wednesday 21st Fixbees Preschool visited Fartown Gurdwara where the children were warmly welcomed. Before we entered the Gurdwaras we all covered our heads, took off our shoes and then washed our hands… We were shown how they value the Sikh scriptures (Guru Granth Sahib) and how they ‘fan’ the Guru Granth Sahib periodically throughout the day by appointed members of their community…

Visitors irrespective of their religion are welcomed into the temple and are offered shelter, comfort and food… The food is served in the community kitchen (Langar) and after our tour of the temple the children enjoyed chapatis, yoghurt sauce and a drink…

The food is cooked and served by the members of the community – the idea is to demonstrate equality of all people, irrespective of caste, creed, religion, race or sex… Each temple usually has four doors to show that it is open to all…

The Nishan Sahib – a yellow (saffron) triangular flag bearing the sikh symbol of “Khanda” flies from every Gurdwara. The term ‘nisan’ means ‘flag’ and ‘sahib’ is a term of respect..
